CapTech is a privately held technology and management consulting firm of roughly 1,100 people in Richmond, Virginia, and its Elevate internship punches far above that size: Vault ranked it the #4 Best Consulting Internship in the country for 2026, ahead of programs at firms many times larger, and Forbes has named CapTech one of America's Best Management Consulting Firms for nine consecutive years. The program is 10 weeks, in person in Richmond, pays about $28 to $30 an hour with a housing stipend, and opens for a short window each fall. The firm's student opportunities page says summer 2027 applications begin in fall 2026, which means the window could open any week now.

So this guide covers the expected summer 2027 timeline, the four tracks, pay, eligibility, and the track-specific interview, reconstructed from the summer 2026 cycle.

CapTech's summer 2027 Elevate applications are expected to open in September or October 2026 and close within four to six weeks, as the summer 2026 postings came down on October 31, 2025. It's a defined window, not rolling. Apply the week postings go live and study CapTech's free track-specific interview guides first.

CapTech's Elevate program simulates a full client engagement, and its interviews probe whether you can think like a consultant and execute like a technologist. What Is a CapTech Internship?

A CapTech internship, branded Elevate, is a 10-week paid program at the firm's Richmond headquarters that the student opportunities page describes as a simulated client engagement: interns work in cross-functional teams through the lifecycle of a project, with mentors, weekly lunch-and-learns with CapTech leaders, and a final presentation. The firm itself does technology and management consulting for Fortune 100 companies and public agencies across financial services, healthcare, energy, retail, hospitality and sports media, and it's majority-owned by Markel Corporation. Vault's 2026 rankings put Elevate at #4 for consulting, #9 for networking and #13 for training and mentoring, up from #5 the year before.

So what's different about it? Scale and intent. CapTech recruits from a targeted set of roughly nine universities, runs a small cohort, and says outright that many interns return as full-time consultants after graduation. It's an audition, and the firm treats it like one.

When Do CapTech Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

CapTech runs a compressed fall cycle. Summer 2026 postings for the software engineering and data tracks went up in early fall 2025 and came down on October 31, 2025, and a Vault reviewer said their whole process, two interviews and a phone call, took about 10 days. For summer 2027, the firm's own page says applications begin in fall 2026, which puts the expected window at September to October 2026 and the lead time at roughly eight to nine months before a June start.

But every date below except "now" is an expected date, projected from that single documented cycle. If the postings are live when you read this, go by the postings.

Now · September 2026YOU ARE HERE

Summer 2027 applications aren't open as of our last check, but CapTech says they begin in fall 2026, so they could post any week. Pick your track now, download CapTech's free interview guide for it, and get a project on your resume that you can walk through in a skills interview.

~Sep – Oct 2026EXPECTEDSHORT WINDOW — APPLY WEEK 1

Expected application window for summer 2027, likely four to six weeks based on the prior cycle's October 31 close. CapTech posts one requisition per track. Apply within the first week, and if your school is on CapTech's campus list, hit the info session the same month.

~Nov – Dec 2026

Expected recruiter screens, skills interviews and decisions for summer 2027. The process moves fast (a Vault reviewer reported about 10 days start to finish; Glassdoor's company-wide average is 21 days). Expect offers before winter break.

Jan – May 2027

Pre-internship prep for summer 2027. If you live 50-plus miles from Richmond, plan housing around the stipend. Skim CapTech's client stories in your target industry so you arrive with context for the simulated engagement.

~Jun – Aug 2027

Summer 2027 Elevate internship: 10 weeks in person in Richmond, three weeks of intensive training, then team project work, mentorship and weekly leadership lunch-and-learns. Full-time offers for graduates of December 2027 or May 2028 follow strong performances.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

So why does week one matter more here than at a rolling employer? Because CapTech's window is short and batch-closed. The summer 2026 software engineering and data requisitions were removed on the same day, October 31, 2025, and the firm says decisions can come within about 10 days of interviewing. Wait two weeks after postings go up and you may be interviewing after the cohort has started filling, or after the window has closed. CapTech's campus info sessions at schools like UVA, UNC, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Penn State cluster in the same stretch, so applying early and showing up in person gets both signals working for you.

Which CapTech Internship Programs Should You Target?

CapTech's Elevate internship runs four tracks that mirror its four service lines. Each has its own job description, skills interview and prep guide, but all four share the same 10-week Richmond program.

TrackFocusDurationKey skills
Software EngineeringFull-stack development on client-style projects: Java, .NET/C#, JavaScript, React, Angular, Node, AWS, Azure, DevOps10 weeks, RichmondProgramming fundamentals, cloud basics, Git, communication
Data Analysis & Data EngineeringSQL, Python, ETL pipelines, dashboards and KPI definition for executive audiences10 weeks, RichmondSQL, data modeling, visualization, business metrics
Management ConsultingBusiness strategy, process improvement, organizational change, project management10 weeks, RichmondStructured problem-solving, case analysis, stakeholder communication
Customer Experience / UX Product DesignUX research, product design, prototyping, portfolio development10 weeks, RichmondDesign thinking, prototyping tools, portfolio presentation

And whichever track you choose, CapTech publishes a free interview preparation guide for it on its student interview guides page. The firm doesn't publish cohort size or per-track headcount. Graduating seniors applying for full-time roles face an additional Power Day with several interviews; interns don't.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

CapTech's requirements are unusually explicit, because they come straight from the summer 2026 job descriptions for the software engineering, data and UX tracks. Expect the summer 2027 versions to roll each date forward one year.

Class year: Current juniors graduating December 2027 or May 2028 (the 2026 JDs required December 2026 or May 2027 graduation)

Post-graduation intent: Must be seeking full-time employment after graduation; the internship is a hiring pipeline

Majors: Computer science, business information technology, systems engineering and analytics preferred, but the JDs say all majors are welcome

GPA: No minimum listed in any of the three JDs reviewed

Work authorization: Must be authorized to work in the US; CapTech doesn't sponsor work visas for these roles

Schedule and location: 40 hours a week in person in Richmond for all 10 weeks; a housing stipend covers interns living 50-plus miles away

Does CapTech Have a GPA Cutoff for Interns?

But wouldn't a consulting firm screen on GPA? Not this one, at least not on paper. None of the three intern JDs from the summer 2026 cycle lists a minimum, and the qualifications emphasize self-motivation in team settings, relevant project or internship experience, and communication. A 3.0 or better is a sensible target given consulting norms, but CapTech's targeted campus recruiting and interview-heavy process mean a strong project and a clean skills interview will carry more weight than a decimal. Where you can't compromise is authorization: no visa sponsorship is a hard line in every JD.

What Skills Does CapTech Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

We inspected three summer 2026 intern JDs (Software Engineering, Data Analysis and Data Engineering, UX/Product Design) and counted how many name each skill. What shows up everywhere?

So communication, self-motivation with teamwork, and structured analysis appear in all three, which tells you CapTech hires consultants first and specialists second. Track-specific tools split cleanly: Java, .NET and JavaScript frameworks for software, SQL, Python and ETL for data, research and prototyping for UX. The management consulting track has no public JD yet; CapTech's interview guide for it points to case-style problem-solving. We'll re-count once summer 2027 postings go live.

What Is the CapTech Application and Interview Process Like?

CapTech's process is short, interview-based and track-specific. There's no HackerRank or CodeSignal gate; the technical check is a live conversation. What does it look like?

So here's the sequence from the student opportunities page, the interview guides, and Glassdoor's 170 company-wide interview reviews.

1. Apply online through the student opportunities page or your campus career portal. Half of Glassdoor interview candidates applied online, 26% came through campus recruiting, and 11% each through a recruiter or referral.

2. Application review by CapTech's talent team for fit with the Elevate program and your chosen track.

3. Recruiter screen (~30 minutes): background, motivation and STAR-format behavioral questions.

4. Skills interview with a CapTech consultant, tailored to your track. Software engineering: live coding on basic data manipulation with time-complexity follow-ups (one 2026 intern was asked for averages, min/max and most-frequent values across a list of grocery transactions). Data: SQL, ETL and analysis scenarios. Management consulting: a structured case. UX: a design-thinking conversation and portfolio walk-through.

5. Decision: fast. A Vault reviewer reported about 10 days from first interview to offer; Glassdoor's company-wide average is 21 days.

Glassdoor rates CapTech interviews 2.79/5 for difficulty with 71% positive experiences company-wide, and the one intern who reviewed the 2026 software engineering process called it easy. Study your track's guide on the interview guides page; it's the closest thing to an answer key a consulting firm publishes.

What Students on Reddit Say

CapTech shows up on Reddit mostly in r/csMajors, where students compare notes on the technical interview and the timeline.

But the most useful thread is a Georgia Tech event post that shows how actively the firm recruits on campus.

A student applying for the data analyst internship asked what the technical interview covers. Replies confirmed it's a live skills conversation rather than a take-home assessment, and suggested brushing up on SQL and practical analysis rather than algorithm drills.

r/csMajors community advice, paraphrased · read the thread

A new grad preparing for CapTech's software engineering consultant technical round heard it was moderate in difficulty and focused on practical coding, not competitive-programming puzzles, which lines up with the intern who was asked to compute basic stats over a transaction list.

r/csMajors community advice, paraphrased · read the thread

A Georgia Tech data science event post pitched CapTech as a strong option for anyone interested in data and analytics consulting, with GT alumni on hand to talk through internships and full-time roles. It's a reminder that CapTech's campus presence is real, not just a line on the careers page.

How Do You Stand Out at CapTech?

What separates a strong CapTech candidate from a generic consulting applicant? Three things. First, use the firm's own interview guides. CapTech publishes a prep guide for every track, and candidates who skip them leave free points on the table. For software engineering, practice live data manipulation and time-complexity explanations; for management consulting, rehearse a structured case; for UX, tighten a five-minute portfolio walk-through.

So second, bring industry context. CapTech's client stories cover financial services, healthcare, energy, hospitality and sports media (PGA Digital and TMRW Sports among them). Interviewers expect you to have read one and to say why it interested you, because generic enthusiasm for consulting is what everyone else brings.

And third, show technology fluency whatever your track. CapTech describes itself as an AI-forward consultancy, and even management consulting interns work alongside engineers on the simulated engagement. Name the tools you've used (SQL, Python, a cloud platform, a design tool), explain how technology solved a business problem in one of your projects, and you'll read as someone who fits a technology-first firm.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?

Not sure CapTech is the right fit? But it isn't the only technology-first consulting firm hiring interns for summer 2027. Two of its closest peers don't have Extern guides yet; the three below them do, and they're the firms a Mid-Atlantic or Southeast candidate typically weighs against CapTech.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 CapTech internship?

No. CapTech's student opportunities page states it's no longer accepting applications for the summer 2026 cohort, and the program ran June 1 to August 7, 2026. Summer 2027 applications are expected to open in September or October 2026 and close within four to six weeks, so set an alert now and apply the week postings appear.

What GPA do I need for a CapTech internship?

CapTech doesn't list a minimum GPA in any of its intern job descriptions across the software engineering, data or UX tracks. The firm weighs project experience, self-motivation and communication instead. A 3.0 or above is a safe baseline, but strong technical skills and relevant projects can make up for a lower number.

How much does a CapTech internship pay?

About $28 to $30 an hour, based on Levels.fyi reports for summer 2024 and summer 2026 and Indeed's $28 average. Over a 10-week, 40-hour program that's roughly $11,200 to $12,000 before taxes. CapTech also provides a housing stipend for interns living 50 or more miles from Richmond; one report listed $2,000 a month.

Does CapTech sponsor visas for interns?

No. Every CapTech intern job description reviewed states that candidates must be authorized to work in the United States and that CapTech doesn't sponsor work visas for the position. International students who would need sponsorship after graduation aren't eligible for the Elevate program, since the internship is explicitly a full-time hiring pipeline.

Where is the CapTech internship located?

Richmond, Virginia, in person, for all 10 weeks. Interns work 40 hours a week at CapTech's headquarters, and the firm provides a housing stipend for those living 50-plus miles away. After graduation, full-time consultants can be placed at any of CapTech's eight US offices, including Reston, Charlotte, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago, Columbus and Denver.

What tracks does the CapTech Elevate internship offer?

Four: Software Engineering, Data Analysis and Data Engineering, Management Consulting, and Customer Experience or UX Product Design. They share the same 10-week program built around a simulated client engagement, but each has its own job description, skills interview and free preparation guide on CapTech's website. Pick one track and prepare for that interview format.

What is the CapTech internship interview like?

Short and track-specific. Expect a recruiter phone screen with behavioral questions, then a skills interview with a CapTech consultant: live coding on basic data manipulation for software engineering, SQL and analysis scenarios for data, a structured case for management consulting, and a portfolio walk-through for UX. Decisions can arrive within about 10 days.

Does CapTech give return offers to interns?

Often, though it doesn't publish a rate. CapTech's student page says many Elevate interns join as full-time consultants after graduation, its job descriptions require candidates to be seeking full-time work, and its CHRO has called the program a launchpad for future consulting leaders. Treat the 10 weeks as an audition, because that's how the firm treats them.

CapTech's fall window is short, and it may open within weeks of you reading this, so the time to build a project you can defend in a skills interview is now.
