Boom Supersonic says its summer 2027 internship applications close "when the spots fill," likely before the end of the year, and it expects more than 10,000 applications for 40 internships and 20 new-grad roles (Boom careers page, 26 October 2026). In plain words, you apply this fall to intern in summer 2027, and the one internship posting is open today.

Interns earn $35 an hour for hardware and $40 for software, work 100% onsite at Boom's Centennial, Colorado headquarters, and must meet US export-control rules, so international students are largely excluded.

Externships are short, remote project programs run by Extern, separate from Boom's internship. Most run 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours a week, so one can run next to your application. The Hydroficient Advanced: IoT Cyber Defense Externship is the closest match for electrical and embedded work, and the Lean Startup Co. Corporate Strategy Externship fits the Special Projects discipline. Explore all Externships.

What Is a Boom Supersonic Internship?

A Boom Supersonic internship is a paid, onsite engineering internship at Boom Technology, Inc., the Centennial, Colorado company building the Overture supersonic airliner and Superpower, an industrial gas turbine based on the same core technology. It isn't the Austin, Texas hospitality-software company also called Boom.

Boom describes it as embedded work on core teams with a mentor, a real deliverable and a final presentation to company leadership. Past interns, the careers page says, designed the Symphony engine coatings strategy, built Overture's airline operating model and took a variable exhaust nozzle actuation system from design through test. Boom hires through one posting and asks you to choose a discipline.

When Do Boom Supersonic Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Boom's Rippling board shows the summer 2027 posting, created on 27 July 2026 (a lower bound on the date it went public). The careers page says summer 2027 applications close "when the spots fill," which it calls "likely before the end of the year," with 40 intern spots.

That's a lead time of about 10 months before a typical June start, though Boom says start dates flex around the academic calendar. We couldn't find Boom's summer 2026 posting dates on its own pages, so the pattern for the next cycle rests on one observed posting.

Now · 26 October 2026YOU ARE HEREROLLING — APPLY WEEK 1

The summer 2027 posting is open. Boom expects to fill its 40 spots, likely before the end of the year, and says it reviews every application but can't respond to all of them. Choose the discipline that matches what you've built.

Apply first, then build proof: the Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship for embedded and instrumentation work, or the Lean Startup Co. Corporate Strategy Externship for Special Projects.
Now – December 2026EXPECTED

Expected: interviews. Boom's process is a recruiter conversation and two technical interviews with engineers. In November 2025, two commenters on Reddit said Boom got back about an interview within roughly two weeks of applying.

Likely before the end of 2026EXPECTED

Boom's own estimate for when the 40 summer spots fill and applications close. There's no posted date, so a posting could come down earlier or later.

Summer 2027EXPECTED

Expected: 12-week internships on site in Centennial, with flexibility for the academic calendar. Boom hasn't published start dates.

July – August 2027EXPECTED

Expected: summer 2028 internship posting. Based on this cycle's 27 July 2026 posting date; low confidence, because only one cycle has been observed.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Boom's own words make this a fills-early program, not a deadline program: applications close "when the spots fill," which it calls "likely before the end of the year." With 40 internships and 20 new-grad roles against more than 10,000 expected applications, a late file is competing for what's left.

Apply this month with a one-page resume that has projects, your role in each and the numbers, plus links to things Boom can look at. If you built hardware, include pictures or video. Boom asks for "the most impressive thing" you've built, so lead with it.

Which Boom Supersonic Internship Programs Should You Target?

Boom runs one internship posting and asks you to pick one of seven disciplines. They're listed below as the posting describes them.

All seven sit on the same posting. Boom's FAQ says a small number of roles exist in finance, supply chain and marketing, but only this one internship posting is listed.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Boom's posting and FAQ state these requirements:

• Class year: most interns are college sophomores or juniors in a degree program. Boom says it will consider an exception if you provide evidence of extraordinary ability.

• Majors: mechanical, aerospace, electrical, computer science, computer engineering, materials science and manufacturing engineering, plus a small number of finance, supply chain and marketing roles.

• Export control: under ITAR and EAR, applicants must be US citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals as defined in 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required State Department authorizations.

• International students: Boom says candidates must be eligible to access export-controlled information, which limits who can apply. The posting doesn't offer visa sponsorship.

• Location: 100% onsite at 6803 S Tucson Way, Centennial, Colorado.

Is There a GPA Requirement?

Neither the posting nor the careers page states a GPA. Boom says "a track record of building beats a checklist," and its FAQ says to apply even if you don't meet every qualification.

Treat proof of building as the screen: Formula SAE, rocketry, machine-shop hours, research, open-source work or RC aircraft. The Manufacturing discipline goes further and says hands-on manufacturing experience is required.

What Skills Does Boom Supersonic Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Boom has one internship posting, so there's no skill count to report. What it does say is specific. Hardware disciplines look for things you've built: a design team, a machine shop or an aircraft project. Turbomachinery wants thermodynamics, fluids and combustion fundamentals, Materials wants metallurgy and nickel superalloy testing knowledge, and Mechanical wants CAD and structural analysis.

Software asks for a serious programming language and fluency with modern AI development tools. Special Projects wants fast spreadsheet analysis and a knack for cross-functional problem solving.

Note: Method: Boom's board listed one internship posting on 26 October 2026 (32 openings in total), so there are no multiple descriptions to count. Skills above come from that posting and the careers page FAQ.

For Boom applicants: Boom's own Rippling board listed 32 openings on 26 October 2026 and one was an internship, covering seven disciplines. Use the market picture to judge how many other employers you're up against, then apply before Boom's 40 spots fill.

Build These Skills Before You Apply

Each skill maps to a remote Externship that's open now. Boom screens mostly on hardware you've built, so an Externship supports an application and doesn't replace a project.

Pair the Externship with something physical or code-based you built, because Boom's FAQ asks for pictures, video or links to look at.

What Is the Boom Supersonic Application and Interview Process Like?

Boom's FAQ describes this route:

1. Apply on Rippling. Open the internship posting, choose your discipline and upload a one-page resume with projects, your role and numbers, your expected graduation date and links.

2. Wait for a reply. Boom says it reviews every application but can't respond to every applicant, so no news isn't a signal either way.

3. Recruiter conversation. If you're selected, expect to talk with a recruiter first.

4. Two technical interviews. You'll complete two technical interviews with Boom engineers.

5. Return offers. Boom decides return offers at the end of the internship: "the internship is the interview."

What Students on Reddit Say

First-hand accounts of Boom's internship are scarce. The one useful thread, from November 2025, is about how fast aerospace companies reply.

In a November 2025 thread about hearing back from aerospace companies, two commenters said Boom got in touch about an interview within about two weeks of applying. A commenter who said they've hired at these companies added that recruiters often send no rejection if you aren't picked for a phone screen.

How Do You Stand Out for a Boom Supersonic Internship?

Boom expects more than 10,000 applications for 40 internships and 20 new-grad roles, so standing out matters.

Lead with the thing you built. Boom asks for "the most impressive thing you've done or built, with pictures or videos": Formula SAE, rocketry, machine-shop hours, research, open-source work or a business.

Write your role and numbers. The FAQ asks for what you did, your decisions and your numbers, not a list of courses.

Pick the discipline honestly. Boom says it will tell you if you're a stronger fit for another team, and Manufacturing requires real shop time.
