BNSF Railway's summer 2027 internships are open right now. On September 4, 2026, BNSF posted 16 Summer Intern 2027 requisitions that together list 90 positions, running June 7 to August 6, 2027. Each posting prints a monthly salary, from $4,375 in Human Resources and Corporate Communications to $6,563 for the bnsf tech internship. BNSF publishes no closing date, and each posting lists a fixed number of positions. In plain words: you apply during 2026, you intern in summer 2027, and the safest plan is to apply now.

What Is a BNSF Railway Internship?

A BNSF internship is a paid, nine-week summer placement at BNSF Railway, the Fort Worth, Texas freight railroad that runs about 32,500 route miles of track in 28 states. BNSF became part of Berkshire Hathaway in 2010, but it hires its own interns on its own board. The program has a corporate track, mainly in Fort Worth and Topeka, and a field operations track in Engineering, Mechanical and Transportation. BNSF doesn't publish a class size or a conversion rate.

When Do BNSF Railway Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

BNSF posts its summer interns once a year, in a single batch. For summer 2026, the Transportation Summer Intern posting went up August 29, 2025 and the bnsf tech posting September 10, 2025, based on archived copies of BNSF's own job pages. For summer 2027, all 16 postings were stamped September 4, 2026, which makes the Transportation posting six days later than last year. The lead time to the June 7, 2027 start is about 9 months. BNSF publishes no closing date, so we can't say how long the postings will stay up.

How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

BNSF doesn't publish a deadline, and that's a reason to move early, not a reason to wait. Each posting lists a fixed number of positions, from 1 to 21, and BNSF requires a separate application for each position and location, so the smaller teams (one position each in System Safety, Network Strategy, Audit and Corporate Communications) may be the hardest to land. Assessments and interviews run through the fall and into January, based on last cycle's reports, so an early application gets an earlier look. Apply this month.

Which BNSF Railway Internship Programs Should You Target?

BNSF splits its 16 postings into corporate and field operations tracks. Pay is monthly and varies by team.

See the program page. BNSF's 10 Management Trainee 2027 postings are a separate, full-time program for recent graduates, not an internship.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

These come from BNSF's program page and the postings we read on October 26, 2026.

• Education: progress toward a bachelor's or master's degree, with a major or minor relevant to the internship, and a minimum of sophomore status by the start date.

• GPA: a 2.75 cumulative minimum, at the time of application and at the start of the internship.

• Experience: less than three years of professional work or military service, excluding internships, part-time jobs and jobs held while a student.

• Work authorization: 15 of 16 postings require that you don't need sponsorship now or in the future, including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT or TN.

• Operations roles: color and hearing standards, 24/7 work, outdoor safety-sensitive conditions, relocation for the summer anywhere on the western system, and up to 25% travel in Transportation.

• Screening: background verification, medical review and a drug screen apply to all positions.

Is the 2.75 GPA a Hard Cutoff?

BNSF states it as a minimum at application and start, in all 16 postings, but doesn't say whether it screens on it automatically. Treat it as a gate. The program page's line about continuing school "past May 2026" carries an old year; the requirement is to keep studying full time after the internship, so confirm the wording with TalentAcquisition@bnsf.com if your situation is close.

What Skills Does BNSF Railway Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

The skills come from the 16 postings, which share templates. Safety appears in all 16, communication in 15 and leadership in 15, since BNSF wants candidates who can work around rail operations and lead a team. Analytical skills appear in seven and data analysis in five. The bnsf tech posting is the one that names code: object-oriented programming in Java, C++ or C#. Accounting roles name reconciliation, FP&A and forecasting, and the Transportation role names logistics, scheduling and field training.

What Is the BNSF Railway Application and Interview Process Like?

BNSF's hiring process page and postings describe the path below. It publishes no interview questions.

1. Apply per position. Submit an online application for each position and location, and create a profile.

2. Screening. BNSF screens applicants and emails you about interviews, testing and hiring events.

3. Assessment and interview. Candidates are contacted for a phone, web or in-person interview, with an initial assessment if required. Students last cycle described an assessment and recorded interview for Transportation, and a coding test for bnsf tech.

4. Conditional offer. A pre-employment medical and background review follows.

BNSF publishes no timing between steps. Students reported waiting from November to January for bnsf tech interviews last cycle.

What Students on Reddit Say

Reddit's BNSF threads are mostly about last cycle and about the full-time job, so read these as process color, paraphrased.

A Transportation applicant passed the online assessment and moved to a recorded interview. One reply said the internship is fine if you can accept that a permanent offer may not follow.

A bnsf tech applicant passed the Codility test in November, then got two "taking longer" emails by January. Others in the thread said interviews were going out then.

Commenters who say they work in rail describe the Management Trainee path as feeding terminal trainmaster jobs, sometimes in remote locations, and most views of that job are negative. These are opinions about the full-time role, not the internship.

How Do You Stand Out for a BNSF Internship?

First, match the track. Transportation interns spend the summer in terminal operations, and the posting stresses leadership, teamwork and safety, so lead with a team or campus leadership role. Second, check the paperwork before you apply: the 2.75 GPA, the sponsorship rule and, for field roles, the vision, hearing and relocation requirements. Third, know where the internship leads. BNSF says it hires interns as full-time Management Trainees, and Reddit views of that job are mixed, so ask what the first role looks like. BNSF doesn't publish a class size or a conversion rate.

FAQ

Can I still apply for a summer 2026 BNSF internship?

No. Summer 2026 internships ran last summer and are over; the Transportation posting from August 29, 2025 is no longer on BNSF's board. Summer 2027 is the cycle open now: 16 postings listing 90 positions have been live since September 4, 2026, for June 7 to August 6, 2027.

When do BNSF internship applications open?

BNSF posts its summer interns once a year. Summer 2026 postings went up August 29 and September 10, 2025, and summer 2027 postings on September 4, 2026. We expect summer 2028 postings from late August to mid-September 2027, with medium confidence from two cycles. BNSF publishes no closing date.

How much does a BNSF intern earn?

BNSF prints a monthly salary in each posting: $4,375 for Human Resources and Corporate Communications, $4,500 for Accounting, Audit, Marketing, Sourcing and Labor Relations, $5,250 for Transportation, Engineering, Mechanical, Safety and Network Strategy, and $6,563 for bnsf tech. Relocation reimbursement is available if eligible.

What GPA and class year does BNSF require?

A 2.75 cumulative GPA at application and at the start of the internship, and at least sophomore status by the start date. You also need less than three years of professional experience, not counting internships, part-time jobs or jobs held while a student, and a major or minor relevant to the role.

Does BNSF sponsor international students?

No, not for these postings. Fifteen of the 16 say candidates must not require sponsorship now or in the future, including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT or TN status. Read the work-authorization line on the specific posting before applying, and email TalentAcquisition@bnsf.com if your case is unclear.

Where do BNSF interns work?

Corporate interns work mainly in an office in Fort Worth, Texas or Topeka, Kansas. Field operations interns are placed across BNSF's western system, and the Transportation posting lists 10 sites. The bnsf tech internship is remote from the contiguous 48 states. All interns start with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth.

Do BNSF interns get full-time offers?

BNSF says the program is designed to identify students it hires as full-time Management Trainees after graduation, and each posting says successful interns may be hired into that role. It doesn't publish a conversion rate. Management Trainee is a full-time program for recent graduates, not an internship.

Are BNSF Management Trainee and Conductor Trainee roles internships?

No. BNSF's Management Trainee 2027 postings and its Conductor Trainee postings are full-time jobs for graduates and new hires. Only the 16 postings titled Summer Intern 2027 are internships. A keyword search for intern on BNSF's board returns more results than that because it matches other titles.

Apply to each BNSF position and location you'd accept this month, and check the GPA and sponsorship lines first. While you wait, a remote Externship gives you a finished operations or data project to talk about in the interview.
