Atlassian hires roughly 300 to 500 interns a year across nine tracks, and it reviews every application on a rolling basis. That's the fact that decides your odds. For the 2027–2028 cycle (you apply late August to November 2027, you intern summer 2028), the window is short and the first two to three weeks get the most open seats. So the calendar, not just your resume, is the filter.

Two numbers matter: a program of roughly 300 to 500 interns, and a rolling review that starts filling spots within weeks of posting. No published GPA floor, an estimated 1 to 5% acceptance rate for technical roles, so timing and proof do the work.

What Is an Atlassian Internship?

An Atlassian internship is a paid, full-time, 12-week placement that puts students on real teams building what Atlassian ships, from Jira and Confluence to Trello and Bitbucket. The program hires roughly 300 to 500 interns a year across all functions globally, and the reviews hold up: 4.6 out of 5 from Software Engineer Intern reviews on Glassdoor, with a 4.9 out of 5 on compensation. Atlassian's "Team Anywhere" distributed-first policy means interns can choose to work fully remotely or from an office, making it one of the few major tech companies offering genuinely flexible internship arrangements.

When Do Atlassian Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?

Atlassian's calendar is predictable even without the exact 2028 dates. US tech roles cluster in the fall: software listings appear late August to early September, then hire rolling through November. The previous cycle evidence (Summer 2026 US) confirmed applications opened around September 2025 and closed by November 2025. So for summer 2028 you apply in fall 2027, roughly 9 to 11 months ahead. But the date that matters is when you submit, because rolling review rewards the first two to three weeks.

Applications for summer 2028 don't exist yet. This is the build window: your resume when a posting opens decides whether rolling review reaches you.

Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open

Rolling is not a detail, it's the whole game. Atlassian recruits on a rolling basis and strongly encourages early applications. Candidates applying within the first two to three weeks after opening are reviewed with fuller headcount and less competition. By mid-cycle, many spots are already verbally committed. So set an alert via the Student Talent Community, and apply the week a role opens.

Which Atlassian Internship Programs Should You Target?

Atlassian runs 9+ distinct intern tracks, from software engineering to product management to data and ML. Unlike companies with individually branded programs per track, Atlassian groups all under a single Internship Program umbrella. The SWE track is by far the largest.

ProgramFocusDurationKey skills
Software Engineering InternshipModify production code across Jira, Confluence, Trello, and Bitbucket. Java/React stack12 weeks (US)Java / Python / C++, data structures, OO design

See every open track on the official early careers page. And note: the Graduate Program (Grad++) is the primary conversion path from internship, a 12-month immersive program for recent grads.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

Atlassian's requirements are consistent across most intern postings:

Enrollment: currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field. Must be in penultimate year, returning to school after the internship.

Graduation: must complete studies before January of the year following the internship (e.g., January 2029 for Summer 2028).

Work authorization (US, CRITICAL): US internships are not available for any work sponsorship including F-1 OPT/CPT or J-1 status. You must have eligible US work authorization (citizen, permanent resident, or equivalent).

International: Australia/NZ and other regions have separate visa and work-rights requirements that vary by location.

Does Atlassian Have a GPA Cutoff?

No official minimum, anywhere. Atlassian doesn't publish a GPA cutoff for SWE or most intern roles. Competitive candidates typically report GPAs of 3.0+, but strong projects, open-source contributions, and prior internships carry significant weight. The India Women in Tech program requires CGPA 7.0+ on a 10.0 scale, but that's the exception. So what actually gates you? The HackerRank online assessment and your project portfolio.

What Skills Does Atlassian Look For, and How Do You Build Them?

Read across the full-text Atlassian Summer 2026 SWE Intern JD and the broader tech-stack documentation, and the pattern holds. OOP proficiency is required, data structures and algorithms are core, and AI/ML exposure is now a preferred qualification. But the skill list only tells half the story. Atlassian's five core values are the framework the Values Interview is scored against, and JD phrases like 'prior internship or open-source contributions' map onto them. So what does that mean? Bring the coding, then wrap every story in a core value.

How Is Demand for Software Engineering Interns Moving Right Now?

Software engineering intern hiring right now: July 2026

Across US software-engineer-intern postings tracked this week · aggregate market data, all employers

=
About 637 US software-engineer-intern postings were open on July 11, holding near the ~650 tracked at the start of the month
ML pays a premium: machine-learning-intern postings advertise about $87,700 versus about $83,900 for general software-engineer-intern roles
The bench you convert into is deep: 136,389 US software-engineer postings are open right now at roughly $164k mean advertised salary

July 2026 is this tracker's baseline month, so month-over-month shifts show up at the August update. The signal today is level: intern demand is steady, and the ML-heavy end of it pays more.

Method: aggregate analysis of US software-engineer-intern, machine-learning-intern, and software-engineer postings via Adzuna, July 2026 baseline. The sample indexes a fraction of all US postings, so figures show direction and relative level, not total market share.

How close is the overlap? The Wayfair project is agent-engineering work that yields the build-and-explain evidence Atlassian's coding interview probes for, and the Beats project ends on the data-driven story a Values Interview wants.

What Is the Atlassian Application and Interview Process Like?

Atlassian's funnel is structured and values-driven, with a total timeline of 4 to 8 weeks from application to offer:

1. Apply on atlassian.com/company/careers. Join the Student Talent Community for alerts. Single-page PDF resume highlighting OOP proficiency, DSA projects, and open-source or hackathon work. No cover letter typically required.

2. Online Assessment (OA), 60 to 90 minutes. HackerRank-based, 2 to 4 coding problems at LeetCode Easy to Medium difficulty. Topics include string manipulation, arrays, graphs (BFS), dynamic programming, and design problems. Top ~30% advance.

3. Recruiter phone screen, 30 minutes. Background, motivation, and logistics.

4. Technical "Craft" interview, 45 to 60 minutes. Code locally on your own laptop. One DSA problem with follow-ups on optimization and alternate data structures. Clean code and thinking aloud valued over speed. Interviewers use a "laddering" technique to adjust difficulty.

5. Values interview, 45 to 60 minutes. Behavioral questions mapped to Atlassian's five core values. Conducted by someone outside your prospective team. This is a non-negotiable gate.

6. Hiring committee review. Independent committee makes a consensus-based decision. Offer extended within 1 to 2 weeks.

So the two skills to drill are clear: data-structures fluency for the OA and coding rounds, and four to six STAR stories flexible enough for any of the five core values. Rehearse out loud, because the Values Interview wants specifics, not buzzwords.

What Students on Reddit Say

Three community insights show the process and culture from the inside, all paraphrased.

Atlassian interns generally report strong mentorship and real ownership of features from day one. Teams use ShipIt days and hack weeks to let interns explore ideas beyond their core project, and the culture genuinely encourages asking questions.

r/cscareerquestionsOCE consensus, paraphrased · read the thread

The interview process typically includes a values-based behavioral screen followed by one or two technical rounds focused on data structures and system design thinking. Brush up on collaboration scenarios because Atlassian weighs teamwork and communication as heavily as coding ability.

Applications usually open in late July or August for the following summer, and the process can take several weeks from OA to final offer. Applying early is strongly recommended because spots fill on a rolling basis and later applicants face a much smaller pool.

How Do You Stand Out in a Class of 300 to 500?

Three moves, all before a role opens. First, apply in week one: rolling review plus a HackerRank gate means timing and prep beat prestige. Second, clear the OA on purpose, drilling 50 to 100 LeetCode problems (Easy to Medium) focusing on arrays, strings, trees, graphs, and DP, because that's where candidate reports say people fall. Third, bring values-aligned stories backed by real artifacts. Atlassian's five core values are tested in a dedicated interview round, so 'tell me about a time you played as a team' needs a deliverable, not a hypothetical. And remember: roughly 75 to 85% of strong performers convert to the Grad++ program, so interview like the return offer is on the table.

FAQ

When should I apply for an Atlassian Summer 2028 internship (US)?

Applications are expected to open late August to early September 2027. Apply within the first 2 to 3 weeks for best chances, as Atlassian reviews on a rolling basis and spots fill quickly. Set an alert via the Student Talent Community.

Does Atlassian require a minimum GPA?

No strict minimum. Successful candidates typically report GPAs of 3.0+. Strong projects, open-source contributions, and prior internships carry significant weight. The India Women in Tech program requires CGPA 7.0+ on a 10.0 scale, but that's the exception.

Does Atlassian sponsor visas for US interns?

No. As of the 2026 cycle, US internships are not available for any work sponsorship including F-1 OPT/CPT and J-1 status. You must have eligible US work authorization such as citizenship or permanent residency.

What is the internship compensation?

$49 to $75 per hour depending on location zone. Zone A (SF/NYC): $59 to $75/hr. Zone B (Seattle/Austin): $53 to $68/hr. Zone C (other US): $49 to $62/hr. Additional benefits include a housing stipend of $1,000 to $3,000 per month, health and wellness resources, paid volunteer days, and equity eligibility.

How long is the internship?

12 weeks standard in the US (May/June to August). Some teams may extend to 16 weeks. Australia/NZ runs November to February. India runs May to August.

Is the internship remote or in-office?

Atlassian's Team Anywhere policy allows interns to choose remote or in-office work. 92% of employees report the policy helps them do their best work. This makes Atlassian one of the few major tech companies offering genuinely flexible internship arrangements.

What does the interview process look like?

Typically 4 to 5 stages: online assessment (HackerRank, 2 to 4 problems, 60 to 90 minutes), recruiter phone screen (30 minutes), technical coding interview (code on your own laptop, 1 DSA problem with follow-ups, 45 to 60 minutes), values interview (behavioral, 45 to 60 minutes), and hiring committee review. Total timeline: 4 to 8 weeks.

What is the return offer rate?

Approximately 75 to 85% of interns receive return offers, converting into the Grad++ graduate program or direct full-time roles. The progression path is L3 (entry) to L4 (Software Engineer II) within 12 to 18 months.

Atlassian's class is selective, but every seat is won one rolling decision at a time. Spend the runway building proof: a remote Externship turns 'interested in Atlassian' into a finished project you can point at.
