Last updated: September 2026
AES is the largest supplier of clean energy to corporations in the world, operates in 14 countries, serves about 25 million customers, and posted $12.2 billion in revenue for 2025. It's also a 13-time honoree on Ethisphere's World's Most Ethical Companies list. For an energy engineering or clean-energy student, that combination is rare: a Fortune 500 utility owner (AES Indiana, AES Ohio) that's also a renewables and battery storage developer.
But AES doesn't recruit interns the way most utilities do. There's no single opening date. Roles post function by function from fall through spring, and each fills on its own. For summer 2027, engineering co-op and intern postings are expected around October to November 2026, with finance, digital technology, and solar operations roles following through early 2027. You apply when your function posts, you intern in summer 2027.

AES posts summer 2027 intern roles on a rolling, function-by-function basis: engineering co-ops and interns expected around Oct–Nov 2026, other functions Jan–Apr 2027. Internships run 3 to 4 months. The only employer-published pay range is $21.00 to $30.18 an hour (Huntington Beach, summer 2026). No GPA minimum is published. One Wind Development intern posting in Louisville, CO has been listed since about May 2026.
AES's intern JDs ask for two things most applicants can't show: a genuine grasp of the energy transition and the ability to turn data into a business case. Extern has no power-systems externship, so don't expect PSSE practice, but the EIC Energy Transition Venture Capital Market Research Externship builds exactly the clean-energy market fluency AES's "strong interest in sustainability and renewable energy" line is screening for, and the Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling Externship covers the financial modeling the engineering co-op JD names for project business cases. Both are short remote programs. Explore all Externships.
What Is an AES Internship?
AES's internship program places undergraduate and graduate students in 3 to 4 month summer roles across finance, digital technology, engineering, legal, and field operations, in the US and at some global locations. The company's own description promises meaningful projects, challenging work, and coaching from leaders. Engineering students can also take the Co-Op route, which alternates 6-month full-time work rotations with school semesters at AES Ohio in Dayton. Current MBA students have a separate MBA Internship in innovation, M&A, strategy, and clean energy.
So what does the work look like? The two full JDs from the 2026 cycle tell you. The Beavercreek engineering co-op supported transmission and distribution design, built electrical models in PSSE and CYME, and worked with finance on project business cases. The Huntington Beach summer intern supported the solar and battery storage field operations team with data systems research and operating procedures. AES is Great Place to Work certified and was named a Fast Company Best Workplace for Innovators in 2022.

When Do AES Internship Applications Open for 2027–2028?
AES doesn't open a single window. In the 2026 cycle, the engineering co-op in Beavercreek carried a November 19, 2025 apply-by date for a June 2026 start, the Huntington Beach solar intern role closed April 7, 2026, and a Wind Development posting appeared around May 2026 and was still listed in late August. That spread is the pattern.
So for summer 2027, plan on engineering roles first in fall 2026 and everything else across winter and spring 2027.
Most summer 2027 postings aren't live yet. One Wind Development intern posting (Louisville, CO) has been listed since about May 2026 and may or may not still be filling; apply if it fits, but don't count on it. Join the AES Talent Network on Workday so you're notified as functions post, and decide which subsidiary board matters to you (AES corporate, AES Indiana, AES Ohio, AES Clean Energy).
Engineering co-op and early intern postings expected. The AES Ohio co-op posted by November last cycle with a mid-November apply-by date. Campus recruiting and career fairs run in the same window. Apply the week your role appears.
More functions expected to post: finance, digital technology, legal, solar and BESS operations. Rolling review means the first applicants in each function get interviewed first. Recruiter contact typically comes within one to two weeks.
Final postings, some with explicit deadlines (April 7 in 2026 for Huntington Beach). HireVue video interviews, then one to several live rounds mixing behavioral and technical questions. Offers go out on a rolling basis.
The internship runs 3 to 4 months from a June start. Project work with experienced engineers or analysts, lunch-and-learns, speaker series, and site visits. Engineering co-ops instead work a 6-month rotation.
How to read this page: our dates come from tracking previous recruiting cycles and daily posting data. Treat them as informed estimates based on historical patterns, not confirmed dates. The company's official careers page is always the most current source. If a role is posted there, go by that, even if this page suggests the window hasn't opened yet.
Why You Must Apply the Week Applications Open
There's no class-wide deadline at AES, and that cuts both ways. A role you missed in November may have a cousin posting in February. But each individual posting fills on its own, and the 2026 Wind Development role sat listed for 115 days, which tells you a posting's age says nothing about whether the seat is still open.
So the working rule is simple: apply within the first week of the posting you actually want, because AES reviews as applications arrive and the interview slots for that specific function go to whoever is already in the queue.
Which AES Internship Programs Should You Target?
How many programs are there? AES lists six early-career tracks, four for current students and two for recent graduates.
But only some of them are internships. The student tracks below are the ones that count as internships; the Energy Innovation Challenge is a competition, not a paid placement.
| Program | Focus | Duration | Key skills |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering Internship / Co-Op | T&D power systems, grid modeling (PSSE, CYME), project engineering, renewables | 3–4 months (intern) / 6-month rotations (co-op) | Electrical engineering, power flow software, financial modeling, Agile teamwork |
| Solar / BESS Operations Intern | Solar and battery storage field ops, data systems, spare parts, LOTO templates | 3–4 months | Data analysis, Microsoft Office, renewable energy knowledge |
| Wind Development Intern | Wind energy project development (Louisville, CO) | 3–4 months | Project development, sustainability, analysis |
| Finance / Digital Technology Intern | Business and finance, digital technology, data systems | 3–4 months | Financial analysis, data systems, Microsoft Office |
| MBA Internship | Innovation, M&A, strategy, clean energy | Summer | Business strategy, financial modeling, energy transition knowledge |
| Energy Innovation Challenge | Real-world energy challenge for graduate students | Event-based competition | Problem-solving, teamwork, networking with AES leaders |
For recent graduates, the 3-year Engineering Rotational Program and the 2-year Energy4Talent program (its 2026 cohort starts September 1, 2026) are the full-time entry paths. Program descriptions are on AES's internships page.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Who qualifies? The published requirements come from AES's internship page and two 2026 JDs, and they're lighter than the utility average.
• Enrollment: Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, an undergraduate or master's program
• Degree (engineering roles): Bachelor's or higher in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related engineering field
• Degree (other roles): No specific major required; the Huntington Beach JD asked for a strong interest in sustainability and renewable energy
• GPA: No requirement stated on any AES intern posting examined
• Work authorization: The 2026 co-op posting accepted US citizens, permanent residents, and student visa holders; AES is an E-Verify employer and publishes no explicit sponsorship policy for interns
• Experience: None required; Microsoft Office proficiency, analytical and communication skills, and familiarity with data visualization tools preferred

Does AES Have a GPA Cutoff for Interns?
Not a published one, which is unusual in this sector. NextEra asks for a 3.0, Exelon a 2.8 cumulative or 3.0 in-major, Dominion 2.5 to 3.0. AES's internship page, the Prosple co-op JD, the Huntington Beach JD, and the Energy4Talent requirements all say nothing about grades.
But the Workday application form could still ask, and HireVue's logic games screen on something. Treat the absence of a number as an invitation to apply, not a guarantee, and put your energy into the skills the JDs actually name.
What Skills Does AES Look For, and How Do You Build Them?
Only two full AES intern JDs were available from the 2026 cycle: the Beavercreek engineering co-op and the Huntington Beach solar and BESS intern. That's a small base, so the chart below counts what those two postings name and should be re-read once summer 2027 roles appear.
And the two JDs agree on three things: data analysis, communication and teamwork, and a real interest in the energy transition. The engineering role then adds the technical layer: power flow modeling in PSSE and CYME, root cause analysis on T&D equipment, scope and cost documents, and business cases built with finance.

Build These Skills Before You Apply
And most of those skills map to a remote Externship, with one honest exception.
| Skill (from real JDs) | JD evidence | Externship that builds it |
|---|---|---|
| Energy transition & clean-energy market knowledge | Both JDs: "accelerate the responsible energy transition"; "strong interest in sustainability and renewable energy" | EIC Energy Transition Venture Capital Market Research |
| Data analysis & visualization | Both JDs: electrical asset data solutions; data systems research and analysis | Center for Improving Youth Justice Data Visualization |
| Financial modeling & project business cases | Co-op JD: build project business cases with finance using financial modeling tools | Yinan Zhao Investing & Financial Modeling |
| Operational process & policy rollout | Huntington Beach JD: development and rollout of policies and business processes; co-op JD: asset governance | Amazon Fulfillment Center Operational Strategy & People Analytics |
The exception is power systems modeling. No Externship teaches PSSE or CYME, so get that from a university lab, a course project, or vendor tutorials. Each Externship above runs 4 to 11 weeks and produces a deliverable you can bring to a technical-and-behavioral interview at AES.

What Is the AES Application and Interview Process Like?
So what does the process look like? AES documents a full four-step method for Energy4Talent, and Glassdoor's intern interview reviews confirm the key pieces (HireVue plus behavioral questions) apply to interns too.
1. Apply on Workday at aes.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/AES_US. Upload a resume and answer a short questionnaire on university, major, and graduation date. Use "Introduce yourself" to join the Talent Network even before your role posts.
2. Recruiter review. Indeed's employer FAQ puts first contact at one to two weeks after applying.
3. HireVue assessment. Recorded video answers about your experiences plus online games that measure logic and problem-solving.
4. Live interviews. Glassdoor reports two to six rounds for intern roles, mixing behavioral and technical questions; one reviewer describes a 30-minute conversation with an HR team member and a business leader. Reviewers call the atmosphere friendly and engaging.
5. Offer. Offer letters follow the final internal decision; the recruiter and HR coordinate start date and logistics.
One warning from r/Grid_Ops: a candidate said AES agreed to a salary range and then offered below it. That thread isn't intern-specific, but get any pay figure in writing. The Energy4Talent process is described on AES's application process page.
What the Community Says
Reddit coverage of AES internships is thin, partly because "AES" collides with sales, audio, and encryption acronyms. The two most relevant threads are below, alongside Glassdoor's intern interview data.
An AES employee described a rotational program where you spend six months in each of four rotations and are guaranteed a senior analyst role at the end. That's the Energy4Talent-style track for graduates, not a summer intern return-offer rate, but it shows the pipeline exists.
A candidate who interviewed with AES said the company agreed to their salary range during the process and then offered well below it. Not intern-specific, but a reason to confirm the hourly rate in writing before accepting.
Intern candidates on Glassdoor report between two and six interview rounds mixing behavioral and technical questions, with HireVue used up front and a friendly, engaging atmosphere in the live rounds. AES's overall rating is 3.7 out of 5 across 967+ reviews, with 69% willing to recommend the company.
How Do You Stand Out at AES?
First, show clean-energy conviction, not just coursework. Every AES JD talks about accelerating the responsible energy transition, and the company is the largest supplier of clean energy to corporations and sells 24/7 carbon-free power to data centers. Name a specific AES project when they ask why AES: AES Indiana's coal-to-solar transition, AES Ohio's grid modernization, or the battery storage build-out. Most candidates say "I care about sustainability." Which project would you want to work on? Say that instead.
Second, learn power flow software before you apply if you're an engineer. The co-op JD names PSSE and CYME outright, while most utility competitors ask for generic engineering coursework. Even a university lab exercise or self-study in a trial version separates you from candidates with theory only.
And third, join the Talent Network and pick your board. AES posts through corporate, AES Indiana, AES Ohio, and AES Clean Energy, and roles post one at a time across six months. The "Introduce yourself" link on Workday gets you notified when your function opens, and in a rolling process, being first in the queue is the whole advantage.

What Other Companies Should You Consider?
But AES isn't the only utility or power company recruiting for summer 2027, and most of its peers run tighter calendars with published GPA floors. Students who apply here usually compare it with these.

FAQ
Can I still apply for a summer 2026 AES internship?
No, in practice. The summer 2026 roles closed months ago (the engineering co-op's apply-by date was November 19, 2025 and the Huntington Beach intern deadline was April 7, 2026). One Wind Development posting from about May 2026 is still listed but may be stale. The next cycle is summer 2027.
When do AES internship applications open for summer 2027?
On a rolling basis, function by function, rather than one date. Engineering co-op and intern roles are expected around October to November 2026, with finance, digital technology, legal, and solar operations roles following from January through April 2027. Join the Talent Network on Workday to be notified as each posts.
How much do AES interns get paid?
The only employer-published range is $21.00 to $30.18 an hour, from the Huntington Beach, California summer 2026 intern posting, which also listed annual bonus eligibility and full benefits. Indeed reports about $24.74 an hour for AES summer interns and Glassdoor estimates roughly $33. Pay varies by location and function.
Does AES require a minimum GPA for internships?
No published one. None of AES's internship pages or 2026 JDs state a GPA threshold, which sets it apart from NextEra, Exelon, and Dominion. That doesn't make grades irrelevant, since the Workday form and HireVue screen still apply, but there's no stated cutoff to clear.
What is the AES intern interview process like?
A HireVue video assessment with behavioral questions and logic games, then live interviews. Glassdoor intern reviewers report two to six rounds mixing behavioral and technical questions, with a friendly atmosphere. Recruiter contact typically comes one to two weeks after applying. Engineers should expect questions on power systems and modeling tools.
Where are AES internships located?
Mainly Arlington, Virginia (headquarters), Indianapolis (AES Indiana), Dayton and Beavercreek, Ohio (AES Ohio), Louisville, Colorado (wind development), and Huntington Beach, California (solar and battery storage). AES operates in 14 countries, but summer internships appear to be US-based; international rotations belong to the Energy4Talent graduate program.
How long is an AES internship?
Three to four months for summer internships, typically starting in June, per AES's internships page. Exact week counts aren't published on individual postings. The Engineering Co-Op is different: it alternates 6-month full-time work rotations with school semesters, so a co-op student might work fall and study spring.
Do AES interns get return offers?
AES doesn't publish a conversion rate, and its internship page doesn't mention one. The documented full-time entry paths are the 3-year Engineering Rotational Program and the 2-year Energy4Talent program for recent graduates. A Reddit employee comment describes a guaranteed analyst role after a rotational track, not after a summer internship.
AES's summer 2027 roles will post one function at a time from this fall through spring, and each one fills on its own. What can you do before your function opens? Join the Talent Network, get some PSSE time if you're an engineer, and finish a short remote Externship that produces real energy-transition analysis.
So be first in the queue when your posting appears, and walk into the HireVue with a project you can talk about. Explore all Externships.
