Pfizer Manufacturing Strategy Remote Externship

Develop critical thinking skills by researching the best strategies to minimize construction downtime.


In this externship program, students will learn strategic consulting skills to analyze and evaluate challenges from non-profit organizations using consulting frameworks, in an overall effort to help them solve their important problems. Selected individuals will be paired with a specific non-profit organization and dive into their strategic problems, such as development, impact assessment, process improvements, talent engagement, communication, and strategic positioning. Throughout this externship program, professionals from PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) will provide mentorship and coaching.

The Experience

  • Learn about the strategy consulting process and how to help create value for a non-profit client based on their vision and mission
  • Research and develop an understanding of a given field
  • Analyze complex problems ranging from fundraising and development, stakeholder management, impact measurement, as well as use consulting frameworks to help identify problem areas and propose solutions
  • Learn to gather, analyze, and visualize data to inform problem areas and possible solutions
  • Create and deliver a compelling presentation to a non-profit client that incorporates valuable insights, trends, and recommendations


  • Ambitious undergraduate students with an interest in consulting, strategy, and non-profits. This program is for students who would like to understand the consulting profession while generating ideas to help impact non-profit organizations.
Program Overview

This experiential learning program has been designed by Paragon One in partnership with Pfizer’s Small Dosage Manufacturing unit to offer talented students an opportunity to develop and showcase their strategic problem solving and critical thinking skills by working on real business challenges. The SDM group has an advanced manufacturing platform called PCMM (Portable Continuous Miniature Manufacturing). This equipment is used to produce tablets for clinical supplies. This is a relatively new technology created from a partnership with Pfizer and a vendor of the equipment. The problem is minimizing the downtime of the equipment so it can run more continuously. The current practices of preventative maintenance are employed, however, there are no features of predictive maintenance. Preventative Maintenance is the process of repairing or replacing parts and components of equipment prior to the breakdown of the system. Predictive Maintenance is the process of using indicators from the operation of the system to identify trends in differences that could indicate a part or component is getting close to failure. Currently, the unit loses precious time due to scheduled and unscheduled maintenance. There is an increasing demand for more capacity from the PCMM operations, therefore need for additional “uptime”. The analyses presented by the students will be used to help assess the current state of maintenance of the PCMM and guide changes to increase the predictive maintenance elements discovered via the research.

Externs Will

Through the externship, you will consult publicly available reports, articles, and other resources to gather case studies on the ways in which the practice of predictive maintenance is performed in various industries. These case studies will include methods, their applications, and the means to achieve them.

Through your research and analysis, you will provide Pfizer’s team members an independent lens on the field and your ideas on how to use Predictive Maintenance to reduce the PCCM downtime and improve production capacity. Your analyses will be used to help assess the current state of maintenance of the PCMM and guide future changes. During this externship you will:

  • Familiarize yourself with Pfizer, its vision, goals, and industry maintenance practices.
  • Understand the concept of predictive maintenance - its advantages and risks in relation to alternate methods of asset maintenance.
  • Research the predictive maintenance use cases for the pharmaceutical and other industries, their best practices, and limitations.
  • Identify potential benchmarks for predictive maintenance outside of the pharmaceutical industry that can be adapted by Pfizer.
  • Learn how a maintenance process works at a large-scale pharmaceutical manufacturer, and research about best strategies to minimize maintenance downtime and increase capacity.
  • Create and deliver a compelling presentation showcasing your learnings and potential recommendations for Pfizer.

  • Ambitious undergraduate and graduate students in the United States with a strong interest in manufacturing technology and/or predictive maintenance. This program is perfect for students who are interested in learning how things work, taking things apart and figuring out potential solutions. We believe that science and engineering majors are the best fit for this program but it is also a good fit for operations research, management, applied mathematics, and pre-med students.
