Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship
Build, hack, and defend real IoT infrastructure, then hand your security playbook to an actual company. You’ll launch realistic cyberattacks - from spoofing and replay to unauthorized shutoffs, and implement defenses like TLS and mTLS.
In 2016, two college students exploited weak default passwords to hijack over 100,000 IoT devices, taking down Twitter, Netflix, Reddit, and Airbnb. The Mirai botnet proved how easily insecure connected devices can be weaponized. Nearly a decade later, the same vulnerabilities still exist—except now they control physical infrastructure.
In this externship, you’ll learn to think like an attacker before becoming the defender. You’ll break into a live IoT system, intercept unprotected data streams, spoof commands to devices, and identify real security weaknesses. Then you’ll switch sides: encrypting data pipelines, locking down device access, and building AI-driven detection to flag suspicious behavior. Your target is Hydroficient’s smart water management platform, where sensors stream data every 0.1 seconds and a single breach could disrupt critical operations.
By the end, you’ll deliver a Security Improvement Report designed for real-world use—and a portfolio artifact that proves you can secure production systems, not just discuss them.
Project Output
This externship places students in the role of cybersecurity engineers protecting IoT pipelines. You will deliver the following:
- AI-driven anomaly detection prototype for identifying suspicious device behavior;
- A structured security review of IoT pipelines;
- Practical playbooks and runbooks adapted for engineering teams.
- Design recommendations for securing critical water shutoff controls.
- A mock incident response report highlighting risks and mitigations.
Tools you'll be learning and using:
- Python
- Mosquitto (MQTT Broker)
- Streamlit
By the end you will deliver a Security Improvement Report to Hydroficient that provides them risk insights, documentation, and design recommendations that better protect their systems. Through this, you gain practical, portfolio-ready cybersecurity and AI skills.

Hydroficient is a climate technology company building automated systems to optimize water usage in commercial and industrial buildings across North America. Their research shows that up to 95% of buildings are over-serviced, meaning excess water flows every time a tap runs. Hydroficient’s IoT-enabled HydroLogic platform dynamically adjusts water delivery based on actual demand, typically reducing water consumption and sewage output by around 20%. Awarded the Canadian Federal Government’s ElevateIP Grant, Hydroficient works with major restaurant chains, hotels, gyms, schools, and other large facilities used by millions of people every day.
