BeReal Product Innovation Externship
In this hands-on externship with BeReal—the app redefining authenticity in social media—you’ll get an inside look at how product decisions get made. You’ll analyze user experiences, benchmark competitors like TikTok and Instagram, brainstorm and prototype new features, test them with peers, and pitch your final proposal. Whether you’re interested in product design, UX research, or strategy, this is your chance to work like a real PM and shape the future of a platform built for real moments.
What if you could design and prototype the next big social feature Gen Z actually wants to use?
In this hands-on product design externship, you’ll step into the role of a product manager—researching user needs, analyzing competitors like TikTok and Instagram, ideating new features, and bringing your ideas to life in Figma. You’ll collaborate, test, and refine your concept before pitching a polished prototype and strategy proposal. It’s a fast-paced, portfolio-building experience designed to help you think like a PM, create like a designer, and stand out in any product interview.
You’ll build real, resume-ready product skills by:
- Mapping the user journey to spot friction and drop-off
- Benchmarking competitors like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat
- Prototyping a new feature in Figma or Canva
- Running peer usability tests and analyzing feedback
- Synthesizing your work into a high-impact stakeholder pitch deck
By the end, you’ll have a portfolio project that shows off your UX, strategy, and communication skills—and a deeper understanding of how real PMs make decisions that shape products used by millions.
Project Output
Design a feature aimed at boosting BeReal's monthly active users metric (MAUs) to demo and present to BeReal leadership at the end of the externship.
Project deliverables include:
1) A visual representation of BeReal’s user behavior pattern highlighting common usage habits, motivations, and frustrations of BeReal users
2) A competitor analysis matrix highlighting engagement-driving features and gaps
3) Prototype Flow Map (photo or text storyboard) and Replit Prototype Link (+ README with click path)
4) Focus group test summary report
5) Final feature proposal deck (5–7 slides) presenting the feature, supporting evidence, and rollout plan
