Beats by Dre Purchase Decision and Behavior Analytics Externship

Love music, shopping, and figuring out what makes customers choose one brand over another? In this externship, you'll visit real stores to talk directly with shoppers, observe their behaviors, and discover what truly influences their buying decisions. You'll use these insights to create practical marketing ideas and strategies, helping Beats by Dre better understand and connect with their customers.

What actually makes someone buy a product? Is it the packaging, the placement, the brand story—or something entirely unconscious? 

This externship puts you on the front lines of consumer decision-making, inside real stores and in front of real shoppers.

Over 8 weeks, you’ll explore the psychology behind purchasing behavior through in-store interviews, observational research, and product display analysis for a leading audio brand. You'll learn how to design thoughtful interview guides, capture honest customer reactions, and turn field notes into meaningful insights. Using empathy mapping and frameworks like the 5 Whys, you'll dig beyond surface-level answers to uncover what truly drives purchase choices. Once you’ve completed your analysis, you’ll synthesize your findings into recommendation decks to present to Beats Senior Management.

Whether you’re headed toward brand strategy, market research, UX, or product marketing, this is hands-on, human-first research experience that sets you apart in a world increasingly powered by algorithms but still shaped by people.

Project Output

Present your learnings, analysis, and recommendations for improving product and marketing strategy. 

  1. Map Shopper Journeys: Show clearly how shoppers think, feel, and act when shopping for products.
  2. Write Interview Questions: Create clear, helpful questions for talking with shoppers and store employees.
  3. Visit Stores and Observe: Watch real shoppers in stores, taking detailed notes of their behaviors.
  4. Summarize Findings: Identify main themes from interviews and observations to understand shopper needs.
  5. Make Recommendations: Suggest clear, practical actions for improving products and marketing strategies.

By the end of this Externship, externs will have created:
