Stanford Medicine Process Design & Strategy Consulting Externship

Want to understand how business processes impact patient experiences and organizational effectiveness? In this externship, you'll explore real operational challenges at Stanford Medicine, analyze workflows, identify root causes of inefficiencies, and design digital tools to enhance decision-making. Develop essential, transferable skills for careers in consulting, healthcare management, technology, and beyond.

Overview

During my externship with Stanford Medicine, I explored how business processes impact patient experiences and organizational effectiveness. I analyzed workflows, identified inefficiencies, and designed digital tools to enhance decision-making, gaining valuable skills for my future career in consulting and healthcare management.

What I did

Throughout the externship, I completed several projects focused on improving patient experiences and clinic workflows. Here’s a summary of the work I accomplished in each project.

1

Project 1: Know How Business Processes Impact Customer Experience

I analyzed how business operations shape patient experiences in nephrology clinics. By identifying inefficiencies and key stakeholders, I created a stakeholder map and a scope of practice summary, illustrating how well-structured processes enhance service quality and patient outcomes.

3

Project 3: Analyze & Optimize Workflows

I refined patient management escalation and triage workflows by utilizing KDIGO, KDOQI, and CMS guidelines. I structured these workflows into decision trees and visualized them using Mermaid.js and Claude AI, transforming complex processes into clear, actionable flowcharts.

2

Project 2: Understand Problems for Customers & Staff

I mapped out workflow challenges that hindered clinic efficiency and affected patient satisfaction. By employing AI to support my research, I uncovered key pain points and conducted a Root Cause Analysis, which enabled me to identify and propose effective solutions for critical issues.

4

Project 4: Implement a Decision-Support Dashboard

I prototyped a decision-support dashboard that translated decision trees into an interactive tool for healthcare teams. Tailoring the dashboard for various roles, I also developed a change management plan based on Kotter’s Model to facilitate clinic adoption of this new tool.
