I worked passionately with previous NGOs on multiple elements of nature conservation, and my recent project, my thesis, was about a possible proof of bats being bio-controllers for olive groves.

About me

Skilled in site investigations, biodiversity monitoring, and translating field and lab data into clear findings using GIS and standard analytical software.

I am Luccia Herrera, an environmental scientist with a biochemistry foundation and hands-on experience in field research, data analysis, and scientific reporting. I am adept at navigating specialized scientific databases and repositories (Benchling, NCBI, GBIF) and archival sources (Internet Archive, Wayback Machine) to support literature reviews and research, and experienced integrating AI research tools (Claude, Anara) into the research workflow. Seeking to apply this research and analytical skill set to an environmental or sustainability role.

Overview

Lebanese olive farming has shifted toward pesticide-heavy monocultures, yet no study had examined bats, natural pest controllers, over its groves. Acoustic surveys at eight Shouf–Jezzine farms detected 13 of 17 regional species, with two pipistrelles making up nearly 70% of calls. Retaining native trees, protecting roosts, and cutting broad-spectrum insecticides are recommended.

What I've accomplished

With little material at hand, some administrative issues that prevented a corrected recording period and restrictive timing, I was able to connect bats to olive groves' lands and come with a hypothesis that suggests that the attractiveness of the land to bats will improve their bio-control services - thus being able to reduce the amount of pesticides sprayed per season.
