Healthcare Operations & Consulting Externship
This externship explores how care coordination work in acute mental health settings can be designed, analyzed, and communicated as a customer-centric operational system. Externs study the case manager’s role at IMH to understand how workflows shape patient experience, surface hidden risks, and make invisible coordination work visible. Through structured analysis, process mapping, and dashboard prototyping, externs learn how operational clarity supports continuity of care, safety, and institutional decision-making.
Overview
During my Healthcare Operations & Consulting Externship at the Institute of Mental Health, I focused on designing and analyzing care coordination in acute mental health settings. I examined the case manager's role to understand patient experience and workflow dynamics, revealing hidden risks while enhancing operational clarity to support continuity of care and decision-making.

What I've accomplished
I produced a structured stakeholder map and a role summary that documented the case manager's responsibilities, coordination gaps, documentation burdens, and escalation bottlenecks.
Project breakdown
The module presented a clinic scenario. I mapped the case manager’s responsibilities, daily workflows, pain points, and supporting quotes, and produced a structured role summary table that highlighted information gaps and escalation bottlenecks.
