The externship examined product approaches social apps use to balance authentic user experiences with engagement-driven features. Work combined competitor benchmarking, engagement-feature analysis, and feature design exercises that investigated tradeoffs between growth mechanics and unfiltered sharing.

Map the End-to-End BeReal User JourneyI mapped BeReal’s end-to-end user journey and documented stages, user actions, thoughts, and pain points in a structured journey map.

Benchmark BeReal’s CompetitorsI mapped BeReal’s product features and explained how each feature drove retention and engagement, highlighting the Friends of Friends feed as a hidden growth lever.

Design a New App FeatureI designed and prototyped BeYou, an optional prompt-based feature that nudged users to post on low-engagement days.

Test App Feature in Focus GroupsI wrote and ran a 35-minute focus group plan to test a BeReal feature called BeYou, including recruitment, session flow, prototype demo, discussion, and a quick survey.
