    Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship

Build, hack, and defend real IoT infrastructure, then hand your security playbook to an actual company. You’ll launch realistic cyberattacks, from spoofing and replay attacks to unauthorized shutoffs, and implement defenses like TLS and mTLS.

    Windows Server Hardening

Utilized PowerShell and Computer Management to deploy RBAC and configure foundational RDP and IIS FTP services Hardened the IIS FTP infrastructure and network by disabling anonymous access, configuring strict NTFS folder permissions, and creating custom Windows Defender Firewall rules to filter and log inbound traffic Implemented local group policies to enforce minimum password lengths, cap concurrent RDP sessions, and restrict Control Panel access

About me

I design and build practical AI-powered workflow automation solutions, combining CS fundamentals with hands-on externship experience.

I am Ashley Janelle Rabino, a junior studying Computer Science at UMBC with a minor in Sociology. I work at Wegmans and I am completing the Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense externship. I build and defend systems, run incident response simulations, and maintain a personal homelab using Docker, Caddy, and Tailscale.

Overview

The externship involved working with an operational IoT installation for a marina, mapping device interactions and security controls. The work analyzed attack surfaces and implemented defensive measures such as TLS and mutual TLS. Deliverables recorded include threat exercises and a security playbook produced for the site.

What I've accomplished

I produced a mapped asset inventory, a STRIDE-based threat analysis with documented attack paths and mitigations, and delivered both a PDF report and a visual threat-model card.

Project breakdown

The externship task presented the Grand Marina water system. I mapped assets, applied STRIDE to identify threats, documented attack paths and mitigations, and produced a PDF plus a visual threat-model card as the final deliverable.

Windows Incident Response Simulation

Conducted forensic incident response on a compromise Windows Server environment, analyzing Event Viewer security logs and PowerShell history to identify initial access Leveraged SysInternals Suite to isolate a persistent netcat backdoor, identified an unauthorized Windows Service utilized for persistence, and pinpointed data exfiltration over HTTP via firewall log audits

Personal Homelab

Deployed a self-hosted home lab on a Raspberry Pi 5, containerizing various services with Docker Compose to manage DNS- level ad-blocking, reverse proxy routing, and service uptime monitoring Configured Caddy as a reverse proxy to route and manage traffic, and set up Tailscale to securely access services remotely

Feistel Block Cipher

Designed and implemented a 16-round Feistel block cipher in Python with a custom 4-bit S-box built from GF(2⁴) inversion and an affine transform
