    Hydroficient IoT Cyber Defense Externship

Build, hack, and defend real IoT infrastructure, then hand your security playbook to an actual company. You’ll launch realistic cyberattacks, from spoofing and replay attacks to unauthorized shutoffs, and implement defenses like TLS and mTLS.

Performed hands-on network administration labs using physical Cisco routers, Layer 2/Layer 3 switched, rack-mounted equipment, and structured cabling through wall ports. Configured and troubleshot VLANs, IP addressing, DHCP, DNS, routing, ACLs, OSPF, and inter-VLAN connectivity using CISCO IOS CLI, Packet Tracer, NetLab, and physical equipment. Diagnosed network connectivity issues by analyzing device configurations, routing tables, and packet captures to identify and resolve infrastructure problems.

Overview

The externship simulated an operational IoT deployment for a marina and required hands-on security testing and defensive development. The work mapped device roles and network topology, ran attack scenarios such as spoofing and replay, and implemented protocol-level defenses. Deliverables included an attack log, threat analysis, and a security playbook handed to the sponsoring company.

What I've accomplished

I delivered a formal threat model of the marina IoT system, including a PDF threat model and a visual threat-model card, supported by STRIDE and CIA analyses.

Project breakdown

The project reviewed the Grand Marina system, applied STRIDE to map threats and attack surfaces, and produced a formal threat-model PDF plus a summary threat-card image documenting identified risks and mitigations.
